15 Things You Might Not Have Known About Space 1 Pluto Not only has Pluto not even been considered a planet for a few years now, as if it needed more reason to feel insignificant, we’d like to point out that it is tiny. The US is 2,900 miles across while Pluto, a feeble 1,400. 2 The Sun Did you know that we live inside the Sun. No, this is not some weird attempt at hippie philosophy; but rather scientific fact. Naturally, just like the Earth, the Sun’s atmosphere extends far beyond its surface and so, we happen to be in it. 3 The Moon Apparently the Moon has a distinct scent. Apparently those who have examined specimens say that it sort of smells like wet gunpowder. This is quite interesting considering it was always supposed to taste like cheese. 4 Jupiter It isn’t enough for Jupiter that it happens to be the biggest planet, it also has to have the biggest and deepest ocean too. At about 25,000 miles, this ocean is about as deep as the Earth is round. And yet it isn’t home to any fish… 5 Tortoises Tortoises make the best astronauts; tortonauts (they are probably called). Okay I made that up. But they did orbit the Earth before humans did. The Russians sent them up during 1968. Given they are notoriously slow, they are probably still completing their mission. 6 Great Wall Contrary to a widely perpetuated myth, the Great Wall of China cannot be seen from space. It can barely even be made out with the aid of a powerful telescope let alone with the naked eye. Then again, maybe it’s just China’s pollution that prevents visibility. 7 Starlight This may seem like a given but have you ever thought about it logically? Obviously, not all starlight is the same age. Even though it is hitting your eyes at the same time, the light from one star might be millions or billions of years older than one nearby. Or it might not. 8 Aquila There is a reason that Aquila (of the Aquila Constellation) sort of rhymes with tequila (or maybe it is a happy coincidence). There exists enough alcohol floating around within the constellation to make about 400 trillion pints of beer. 9 Junk Apparently there are around 8,000 pieces of junk floating around in the Earth’s atmosphere. I guess you could come back in a million years and it might be a more visible problem. I think we might ruin the surface of the Earth before that could happen though. 10 Crying Have you ever watched the film Gravity and picked it apart for all of its technical faults? No? Well then neither have I. If I had however, one of the may would be that there is no crying in space. The tears would actually stick to your eyes. 11 Rust Mars is a little bit like Uluru and the majority of the Australian Outback in that, not only does it appear to be a barren, red wasteland, they are both areas which are, in essence, covered with nothing but rust. 12 Diamonds This could be a good way of getting Kim Kardashian off this planet; and we wouldn’t even need to lie to her. We could just inform her that there is a planet bigger than our own within our galaxy which made of entirely of diamonds. 13 Mercury I bet you thought that Mercury was the hottest planet in our Solar System and that’s why we use the name for the red stuff in thermometers. Well it isn’t. It has no atmosphere and so the heat escapes at night. Due to Venus’ thick cloud cover, it is actually the hottest. 932 degrees Fahrenheit sound like a nice day out to you? 14 Tall Man Syndrome If you are concerned with your height and have insecurities about being short, maybe space travel would help you gain some much-needed self-esteem. Cartilage disks open up due to weightlessness in space meaning that an astronaut would generally be about two inches taller. 15 Aliens! Aliens once invaded the Moon. How come we haven’t heard of such things? Well, it is possibly because you are not an idiot. What I mean is, Neil Armstrong was the first man on the Moon. Spell Neil A. backwards…
