4. Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas
Oscar Wilde was married with two sons and in 1982, this strange affair started. This was followed by a series of lovers’ spats, including one in which severe criticism of Douglas’ translation of his work was accorded.
This was an affair that was unacceptable by all standards of the society in those ages. Nobody could have accepted a same sex relationship.
The father of Douglas, Marquess of Queensberry, somehow realized that there was something more than friendship between his son Douglas, and Wilde. This was the beginning of the end to this relationship. He practically made every effort of separating his beloved son from this relationship. When the noble discussions ledto nothing, he resorted to his mean and wicked ways.
The Marquess of Queensberry openly retaliated against this,knowing that his son would be equally victimized in this fight, which he started by calling Wilde a “Sodomite”! It just got messier from there. Little is left to imagination!
