2. Conrad and Gina
General Franz Conrad – the Chief of the Austro-Hungarian Army and the highest official of the Empire, was hopelessly in love with a married Italian Aristocrat named Virginia. While half of the world was dying and he had lost his own son, he made it a point to write letters to his lady love at least once a day. Sometimes he even wrote six letters a day.
The world was moving towards a disaster and while drafting his military strategies, he had this one face in his mind – his lady loveViginia!
Why he was pursuing her is known clear, but this obsession was the fuelling stimulus of the preventive war against Italy and Serbia. Eventually, it resulted in the World War I, citing Austria’s role in the conflict.
Each of his confidantes tried to talk him out of it, but he had the persistence of an adolescent for pursuing his love. This is all that mattered to him.
Imagine the world coming to war with each other because a particular Gentleman was in love!
