People Used to Pose for Photos with their Dead Relatives! (8 Pics) 1 Mae-Mae This kind of weird and grotesque ritual isn’t exclusive to Victorian era, either. This here is the late Miriam “Mae-Mae” Burbank, who her two daughters claim was always “full of life”. She was so full of life, in fact, that they decided to organize an impromptu photo shoot/wake before actually putting her in the ground. Well anyway… sweet dreams! 2 Don’t Slouch Have you ever seen old Victorian-era photos of relatives from several generations ago and thought, “wow, they really used to just slump in their chairs back then!” Well, sorry to be the one to tell you this, but perhaps the relative was already dead at the time the photo was taken! As you can see here, it’s hard for a corpse to sit up straight and say “cheese!” when the photographer snaps the photo. 3 Not Your Typical Hallway Photo Apologies for anyone put off by this once-beautiful-but-sadly-deceased-at-the-time-of-this-photo woman. One would think that if the nature of the death perhaps left the body slightly disfigured for whatever reason, they would choose not to take any photos. Nope, some people just went ahead and took the shots anyway… Would you hang this one up in the hallway? 4 Eyes Wide Shut Think this gallery can’t possibly get any creepier? Think again! One of the girls pictured above is dead. In fact, the deceased one doesn’t even have her eyes open. But, wait a minute… both their eyes are open, right? Nope – the girl sitting down is actually dead, and someone has painted eyes on her eyelids to make her seem lifelike for the picture. 5 The Dead Man Stand Here we have an actual diagram of how the stands worked, and you can also see evidence of the “dead man stand” near the guy on the left’s foot, where the base is peeking out from behind his leg. The stand comes complete with a brace for the back of the neck, so the head doesn’t roll forward on the shoulders. 6 Dead Giveaway While this boy might not look a little more lively than the last two, the evidence can be seen down near his feet – this is the base of a stand used to hold corpses upright for taking photos. This deceased kid is actually being propped up by a stand for the sake of taking this one last shot before he’s lost forever. I guess you could say the bottom of the stand peeking out from behind him is a DEAD giveaway. 7 Nodding Off At The Back And neither is this poor girl on the left here. It’s a bit bizarre for her to have her eyes shut and head lolled back on its shoulders while all the other children look into the camera with eyes open (though not smiling, because apparently it was pretty much illegal to smile back then)… no, unfortunately she’s dead. 8 Wake Up! These days, you would receive some pretty horrified and outraged looks if you were to rock up at a funeral with a camera and start snapping away… especially inside the casket. But back in the 19th Century, taking pictures of the recently deceased was a lot more common. In fact, people used to set up actual photo shoot to take some last photographs in which they could remember their deceased loved ones by. In case you haven’t already guessed, this kid on the right isn’t asleep…
