Xbox One vs PS4: Which Will Be Better? 1 Let the Battle Begin! If you're a serious gamer, you were probably just as intrigued by the announcement of both new consoles. First the Playstation 4 specs were released, giving us a new, clear idea of the future ahead of us. Then the Xbox One conveniently rolled out the red carpet a few months later. They released their statements about these new devices within three months of each other. We can't help but feel that maybe Sony had a leg up on the competition since Playstation made their announcement first. The Xbox One seems more like a desperate attempt at grabbing the attention of consumers who are ready to take on a new system. We don't feel like it expresses any original ideas or features that we cannot live without. Though you can decide, we're giving a point to Playstation just for having the first press conference. 2 Live Streaming At the time of their press conferences, neither console knew for sure if they would allow live streaming. The Xbox 360 already allowed live streaming so it would be a bit of a downgrade if the new console didn't. Now they are saying both will have some sort of streaming feature. Why was this such a hush-hush idea for a while? It's not like it is a brand new concept. If we could enjoy live streaming on another console before then why would any new gaming console avoid such? Bottom line, we want to be able to stream our games over the interwebs. Playstation has since stated that it will have this feature. Xbox also released some information that suggests the same live streaming capabilities of its last consoles. 3 Subscription Fee We're totally familiar with the idea of subscription fees thanks to the Xbox. Xbox has always had a better system and as a result has felt it okay to charge a little bit to subscribe. But since Playstation is not known for doing a subscription fee. Many gamers have preferred Playstation over Xbox because of the cost. Neither had been announced at the time of the press conferences. We're not sure if they were just throwing it out there and trying to get feedback before making a decision. In case they were (or currently are) looking for opinions from gamers on it; let us make it clear right now that we think this would be a bad idea for Playstation! No one wants to have to pay for something that once was free! Thankfully, Playstation has confirmed that they will not be charging for it. The PSN will remain free. 4 Voice Commands Voice commands are exactly what they sound like. They are a feature that enable users to control the functions with their voice. It's supposed to be all futuristic and convenient like Siri was on the iPhone. Xbox will have them, PS4 may not. Voice commands can really come in handy on some consoles. Especially if you are using motion control, which both consoles are supposed to support. The voice command features on the Xbox are going to be about the same as they have been for the Kinect. For the Playstation, voice commands may not be a built-in feature. According to CNet, it may instead be included in the PlayStation Eye camera. 5 Motion Control Motion control has helped change the way we play games. The Playstation 4 will feature an upgrade from their original PlayStation Move. Xbox One will have a built-in feature similar to the Kinect. Remember when the Wii first came out? Everyone was freaking out. We're not sure if that was just because Nintendo was starting to tank so hard or because it took virtual reality to a whole new level. When Xbox came out with its Kinect device, they gave the Wii a run for its money but still couldn't lay the thing to rest. With both Playstation 4 and Xbox One engaging their players with motion control, we're pretty sure that Nintendo is going to be running back to the drawing board. 6 Skype Let's get real, people use their gaming consoles for a lot more than gaming these days. We all want to be able to call our loved ones in other states and countries. We all want to game and video chat at the same time with that awesome friend we have overseas. Xbox One will give you that opportunity. The Xbox One is out to be the only system. As the name suggests, you'll only need the one console to fulfill your needs and with its Skype feature we've gotta say, it's living up to that goal. You may not have all your buddies with you to game and here is where a friendly Skype call could come in handy. Or say you're in the middle of a fierce showdown and your Aunt Ida is calling in for the weekly family Skype. We love that Xbox One will have this feature but there has been no confirmation from Playstation about how the PS4 will help us keep in touch. 7 Always Online Connection One of the biggest rumors leading up to the announcements of these consoles was that they will both need to be online at all times. Playstation quickly dashed this rumor. Not only will it not need to be connected 24/7, you will not need the internet to enjoy its basic features. With the Xbox One, however, you will at least need internet to use it. No, it will not always need to be connected but without internet, the device is basically useless. There are some benefits and drawbacks to the idea of always being connected. In the first place, it seems like it would come with its share of fees. Beyond that, can't anyone else see this as a security risk? 8 Used Game Fees If you hate the idea of paying fees just because of a used game, you're not alone. It is a ploy that has the word "greed" written all over it. We think this is a really dumb idea that will only alienate fans! PS4 won't charge for used games, but it seems likely for the Xbox One. Everyone has been outraged about the mere idea of this. The rumors were swirling over Playstation possibly adopting the idea of charging a fee for playing used games. This was myth was quickly busted as Playstation's goal has always been to stay affordable. Xbox seems to have little concern for how much this irritated their fans. There is still no word on whether or not Xbox One is going to charge for the most ridiculous things possible but according to experts there has been more and more evidence that makes it seem like a likely idea. If the rumors are true, this could be the nail in Xbox's coffin. 9 Possible Mandatory Installs Mandatory game installs? That's not exactly a selling point to us! We're not sure what would possess Microsoft to think this would be a good idea but Xbox fans are pretty mad about it. If you've been a fan of Playstation for a while, you were there when the PS3 blew it... sort of. The console embraced a gaming experience that would be hampered by loading times. The best way to promise this was by installing a game. So while some will argue that what the PS3 did was mandatory and unfair, others are perfectly okay with it. Perhaps what has everyone up in arms about this is the fact that it's being called a "mandatory game install" which sounds ominous like we're going to buy the PS4 and wake up in a bathtub of ice with a kidney missing. Chances are, even if PS4 does embrace this game install thing, it won't be for every game and certainly nowhere near a bad as it sounds. 10 Plenty of Storage Serious gamers will be happy to know that they will not have trouble with storage. We'll all be able to play to our hearts content thanks to the massive hard drive on the Xbox One and the cloud storage available on both. For the Playstation 4, this is one of the most highly anticipated bits of information to be revealed. In case the 500GB isn't enough storage for you, the cloud drive will help you store even more. The Xbox One is certainly the top contender in this round but that is only because we don't know the specs on the PS4 yet. According to all of the teasers, the PS4's hard drive is going to be "very large." We'll know just how large on the 10th of June. We suspect it will either be the same size or smaller but that is okay because they have confirmed cloud storage. 11 Tech Specs Don't feel bad if you have no idea why 8GB is a good thing. In fact, you may not even be sure if it is a good thing. This is all a bunch of techy talk to make sure the hardcore gamers know that they will have plenty to work with. Essentially, it will be like having a computer that you've bought with the specific purpose of gaming. Except you get the play it on your big ol' TV. It will hold more data, stream faster and kick butt while doing it. You really can't go wrong with either console in this round because both have some pretty great specs. It all boils down to what you feel works best for you. 12 Blue-ray/DVD You want blu-ray and DVD on your gaming console? Well, you're in luck because they both got 'em! Though we're not sure why this is such a grand announcement... That's right, your new favorite gaming device will boast the ability to play your favorite films. Is this really a feature that anyone was doubting? Seriously? We've been watching DVDs on our Playstations since the PS2 took the world by storm. The very same thing was true of the Xbox 360. It would be a huge step backwards if you suddenly couldn't watch movies on these gaming consoles, especially since both are trying to be the one ring -- er, system -- to rule them all. If this weren't a feature, that would be the moment we'd just write off Sony and Microsoft completely and this gallery would turn into a sales pitch for the latest Apple product... 13 Controller Designs It's a sad day when the best thing about your console is the controller. Xbox's controllers seem to look classier than the actual console, but don't be deceived, they still run on AA batteries. For some reason a bunch of people are upset about this but to be honest, we really don't mind. It kind of takes us back to the simpler times of the Gameboy days. Initially, we had no idea what was going on with the PS4's controller. After closer inspection, we like it and know you will too! Its sleek design is an upgrade of the Playstation controller we've all gotten used to over the years. Though it does seem a bit heavier and fatter, it's most highlighted new feature is its 'share' button which allows users to share screenshots of their game with their buddies. The Xbox controller is also an improvement. Though it doesn't seem to be by much. It's basically just a slight update on an existing idea which honestly may be the better way to go. One point to Playstation for innovation and one to Xbox for avoiding confusion. 14 Design Specs Yeah, the Xbox may look like a busted VCR from a yard sale but in its defense, it is a device with the word "box" in it. It can pretty much get away with looking like something straight out of the 80s -- that is probably going to collect an unholy amount of dust and fingerprints -- and we really can't say anything about it. At least they had the guts to unveil their design first, Playstation is going to keep teasing us until June 10th. Though Xbox released their statements later than Playstation, they already gave us a nice example of what the console will look like. We wonder if the PS4 is just going to be a sleeker version of previous models. Afterall, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Though we're pretty sure that if the controllers have changed that much, the console will probably have a sleek redesign as well. At this point we really don't care but all that hype had better be building up to something good! 15 Code Name: Awesome If we're going by code name alone, Playstation even sounds cooler! Orbis sounds all mystical and futuristic. Durango just makes us think of off-roading in the desert. Seriously, what does that have to do with a gaming console? As people still praise the Xbox One, the gaming community will continue to roll their eyes. We'll see who the consumers choose for their top new gaming device. Though we won't know for sure until final specs are revealed, for the first time we'd say there may be a clear winner in a console war. If you want to save money and involve yourself with a company that actually considers their customers, it's probably going to be Playstation FTW! In the battle of PS4 VS. Xbox One, we'd say the jury is still out until the big June 10th announcement. We're more partial to the Playstation for now but by some miracle, there is still a chance of being swayed in Microsoft's direction.
