In the Land of Oz, particularly towards the Western coast, it is illegal to crush a can of beer between your breasts. So if you are in Golden State and have just finished a can of beer, simply resist the urge to crush it between your breasts! That is, if you get that kind of an urge at all! And remember, this ‘strict’ law brought in a hefty price to pay for a bar just outside of Perth. That pub was set back by $1000 just because somebody dared to crush a beer can between their breasts! Roll you eyes while you have the time! 2 Texas Before the Wikipedia came to be, in Texas it was illegal for anyone to own an Encyclopedia Britannica. You might think Texan authorities wanted no smarty-pants from their state. But the fact is that they did not want people to own the tomes because they carried within them the recipe to brew the perfect beer. What the Texan legal heads wanted was that instead of working hard to brew beer at home, people should head to the local pub in large numbers. Perhaps, the Texan authorities were hand-in-glove with local beer bars that made them come up with such an absurd law! 3 Canada Are you at a Canadian bar holding a mug of beer, in particular in Saskatchewan? If so, before you take a sip, read through two of its ‘strict’ beer laws. One says that in the above-mentioned state you must not drink water while you are sipping beer. As if that is a sinister sin! And the other law has it that if you are about to down a Sourtoe Cocktail at the Sourdough Saloon, you should be extra wary about not swallowing down the special secret ingredient in the drink- a human toe. For if you do so, you risk a hefty fine for the Saloon which has to then find a new, ‘willing’ toe donor! You might as well drink beer elsewhere on the globe! 4 Scotland United Kingdom is known to be pretty strict about its liquor laws. As compared to the rest of the UK, Scotland, however, is said to have laxer legalities pertaining particularly to beer consumption. Nevertheless, it must be said that the Scots do take their beer laws quite ‘seriously’. For example, there is a beer law in this land that clearly states that if you are drunk to your limit with the brew, you must not be caught in possession of a cow. Seriously, how weird can beer laws get? Would possessing a cow in a drunken state endanger the cow or would it risk the life of the drunkard? 5 Russia The world might think of beer as a hard drink. True, it has less than 10% of alcohol, but for most countries around the world, beer is liquor and hence all liquor laws apply to it too. However, Russia begs to differ from the rest of globe. In this Asian nation, beer until recently was not regarded as booze at all for its low alcohol content. In fact, it was looked upon as a foodstuff that you could easily pick up off store shelves and guzzle down a few gulps then and there. But in the recent times, the laws concerning beer have been made stricter and the legal age of drinking as 18 years has been imposed on it, albeit loosely. 6 Iowa Are you planning to pop into the bed with your wife tonight? Well, that is an absurd question you might say for you do it every night. But if you are in Iowa, you might want to be extra careful about popping into the bed with your better half after having a drink. In the Corn Belt State you could risk a fine if you were to go to bed with your partner after having more than three sips of beer. Of course, the law makes no mention of how regular you need to be with the three sips to risk a fine. Three sips? What kind of a magic figure is that? 7 Alaska and Ohio In cold Alaska, as per the law, you cannot serve your dear moose any beer. Perhaps, the legal bodies here felt that the poor animal was not capable of holding its liquor. If this is not weird enough, then check out what the beer law of Ohio says. In this southern US state, it is absolutely okay with the law for you to serve beer to your fish. The only catch is that while you serve your pet goldfish some of the brew, you should not get drunk. Maybe those who concocted these laws should reconsider on who in the world wants to feed animals like the moose and the fish some beer! 8 Nebraska Nebraska has not just one or two weird beer laws. In fact, this state boasts of many such confusing laws and one among them is about selling beer. In Nebraska, it is illegal for a person to peddle beer on their residential premises. The clause here is that selling beer on premises is illegal only if you are doing so while not making a kettle of soup. Further, there is no mention of whether reheating an earlier made batch of minestrone is acceptable in the eyes of the law or not. The point here is why would any legal body want to combine beer and kettle of hot soup in a single law? 9 Nigeria Beer laws cannot be weirder than they are in Nigeria. In this African nation, it is illegal to import the hard drink. In fact, as per the law, you are not even supposed to brew the drink in the country. But the law is quite the contrary when it comes to drinking beer. It says that if you do manage to lay your hands on a mug of beer, you can drink it. You can even purchase the brew from a shop, as long as you are over the age of 18. The point here is if you cannot import beer and cannot make it within Nigeria, how will you ever lay your hands on a mug full of beer? Pretty confusing isn’t it?
