18 The Kanto region is based on a region in Japan with the same name

Till Gold/Silver hit the market, Pokémon fans in America had no idea of the place in Red/Blue. Once this was revealed, Pokémon players who had some idea of Japanese geography were taken aback. The region’s name was Kanto, in which major Japanese Japanese cities like Yokohama and Tokyo are to be found. In addition to this, Pokémon’s Kanto brought other famous Japanese areas within the ambit of the game. These included Mount Silver in place of Mount Fujiyama. The following generations of Pokémon creators and players have been inspired by other major Japanese regions when constructing, studying or learning their maps.
