10 Indie Movies which Definitely Deserve a Watch

All of us definitely love Bollywood. But apart from mainstream cinema which is packed with romance, actions and visuals larger than life, there are some films which are truly hard hitting. their plots revolve around serious social issues which need to be known by as many people as possible. Here is a list of movies which are made with efforts worth out appreciation. 1. Udaan Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, ‘Udaan’ talks about issues most of the teenagers go through and the most special part of this movie is that unlike many other movies having the same thing, Udaan does not involve a love story. Rohan, the protagonist of the film is a 17 year old boy who returns from a boarding school to live with his authoritarian father who wants his own son to address him as ‘sir’. His father does not approve him of showing interest in poetry and literature as well and the way Rohan deals with all this will make the audience think. 2. ID This Kamal KM directorial is something which is rarely seen in mainstream movies. This thriller starts with a labourer arriving at Charu’s (protagonist) flat for repair work. He becomes unconscious while working, after which Charu goes on a wild hunt across the city to find out the identity of this man. The movie deals with the thousands of labourers who come to Mumbai without any form of identification and the issues of their displacement. A completely different idea which deserves a watch. 3. Shuttlecock Boys This is a film every Indian kid will relate to. We all remember our badminton games in the streets or courts and this film explores the story of four friends who are extremely passionate about this game. Directed by Hemant Gaba, this movie celebrated the spirit of youth in a simple way and the characters of the film are very relatable. Alongside their passion for the game, they are also trying to set up a business of their own and this film will definitely manage to put up a smile on your face and make you feel nostalgic. 4. Mumbaicha Raja Set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s massive Ganesh Chaturthi processions, this is a story of a teenager boy Rahul, who befriends a balloon seller kid. Together, they go around the city befriending stray dogs, stealing vegetables for meals and even stealing an auto rickshaw. This Majneet Singh directorial gives us an overview of the life of children who grow up in the slums of Mumbai and many call this film as an India’s answer to Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millioniare. 5. Peddlers Written and directed by Vasan Bala, ‘Peddlers’ is a crime thriller which revolves around the lives of two individuals in their twenties, who are forced t involved in the city;’s underworld drug trade due to poverty. Side plots involve a violent cop who is behind them and a science teacher who is working as a drug peddler to fund her cancer treatment. Along with an amazing plot, the film is also made with great cinematographic skills. 6. Delhi in a Day This movie portrays the contrasting lives of Delhi’s rich and elite upper class against the lives of their servants and domestic help. The story of the film starts when a traveller from Britain comes to reside with an elite family in Delhi. The traveller loses a big sum of money in the house and without any doubt, the domestic help of the house is given 24 hours to return the amount. The end is hilarious and this dark dark humour will definitely make us think twice before making assumptions about anyone. 7. Children of the Pyre Directed by Rajesh S. Jala, this film is a story of seven young boys who make their living by working at Manikarnika, India’s busiest Hindu cremation ground. They burn the piled up bodies, steal shrouds and make their living on the small tips which the families of the dead offer them. Living amidst the heat of burning pyres and authorities constantly trying to shoo them off, these kids fight for a living in order to support themselves and their families along with being addicted to smoking chillums since a very young age. One of the most powerful movies made in a long time, this film will definitely assure you that you are much ahead in the race of survival. 8. Liar's Dice This movie revolves around a socio-political themed plot which deals with the issues of migration in India. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, this movie which is shot at the Tibet-Himachal border is aesthetically very pleasing. This movie is a story of a woman and her child in search of her husband, who is a construction worker. The challenges and mysterious incidences which she encounters during her search journey are the jewels of the story. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's acting makes the film worth watching. 9. Miss Lovely Based on the working affairs on Mumbai’s C-grade film industry, this movie has got a theme which is not experimented much by filmmakers in India. Directed by Ashwin Ahluwalia, this movie is a story of Vicky, who is a cunning man and his brother Sonu who are involved in producing illegal C-Grade movies. The film has got authentic visuals, a plotline which is completely out of the box and will make the audience think before criticizing any movie of the above mentioned category. 10. Chauranga This movie is an overview of the treatment given to those belonging to the Dalit community in India, even after laws being established to protect their rights. Directed by Bikas Misra, ‘Chauranga’ shows us the struggles of a Dalit woman and her two sons, one of which is rebellious to the treatment and other one has accepted his fate of being treated with horrific discrimination. The movie definitely hits hard on the audience’s minds.
