Interview

“We had to take frequent breaks while shooting.” – Raveena Tandon

Filmy Mantra: You received the National Award for Daman, but after that, we got to see you in very few films. Have you become choosy or is the any other reason?

Raveena: I think I started to focus completely on my family, because I tell everybody this that acting is not my life it’s just a part of it. And in the beginning, my attention was towards my children and soon after that I worked in movies like Shobana Seven nights, did a guest appearance in Budhha Hoga Tera Baap for Amit ji and I love jazz music so sang in Bombay Velvet. Shobhana Seven Nights won awards in Houston Film Festival and Chicago film festival. I also starred in Shabd though I was not the main protagonist in it. I have been making appearances in the industry for example reality TV shows. But this film caught my eye since it sends out a powerful message. And it was a challenge for me. I was offered many blockbuster movies such as Gulab Gang, Kya Kool Hai Hum, Chashme Baddoor and some horror films as well. Me, being a social activist, I wanted to do a movie which would actually give out a social message for the audience and this was the right film because I believe in working towards this issue.

Filmy Mantra: Your film talks about women empowerment. Similar such as Neerja have been quite successful and Sridevi’s “Mom” is highly anticipated by the audience. So, what is your take on the fact that such movies are gaining acceptance amongst the masses?

Raveena: I think this is a wonderful era for our industry. Many inspirational movies have been made and appreciated such as Pink, NH10, Neerja, Mary Kom. I think this kind of movies should release every month until a positive change comes in our society.

Filmy Mantra: Do u think Maatr will bring about a revolution in the society?

Raveena:  I don’t think one movie can bring about a revolution. But you can see from the reaction in the videos, people are getting the message, especially boys, that they feel the need to protect the girls in public or work places etc.

Filmy Mantra: Thank you so much for joining us.
