Bollywood is known for a lot of things but the least one is for Horror because of the almost laughable picturization of ghosts, unrealistic blood, unnecessary gore, oh and the melodrama! All these can add up to a pretty bad picture and we all know the films are more tickling than spine tingling.

But, I must admit that there are very few movies which can haunt us for days and months. Here we bring you a list of Bollywood Horror Movies which can definitely scare your wits and make your hair standing all the way.

1. Mahal (1949)

Incidentally, this was the first reincarnation film of India. Huge hit as this was a great supernatural suspense thriller in those old times.

 

2. Kohraa (1964)

This movie was adapted from the novel Daphne du Maurier, a French novel. This was also adapted by Alfred Hitchcock as Rebecca.

 

3. Jadu Tonaa (1977)

This film revolves around a little girl who is possessed by an old man, apparently a criminal looking for a revenge on one of his former friends.

 

4. Bhoot Bungla (1965)

Written and directed by Mehmood. Although it was his debut film, Mehmood created a great musical thriller with dancing and singing ghosts of his time. Guess what? He plays the lead role in the movie and he went on to become one of the greatest comedians in ‘70s.

 

5. Phir Wahi Raat (1980)

Actor Danny Denzongpa’s first directorial film was a huge hit during ‘80s. Starring Rajesh Khanna and Kim Yashpal as the lead actors. This film is about a young woman who is suffering from recurring nightmares and comes across a psychologist (played by Rajesh) who takes her back to her ancestral home where the frequent nightmares originate from.

 

6. Purana Mandir (1984)

A horror list without a film of Ramsay brothers? No way! This film is a story about a monster-demon, Samri. This film is considered to be a cult classic in India.

 

7. Raat (1992)

After watching this film, you’ll be terrified of every cat you come across. A family of four moves into a new house which was apparently haunted and when a cat gets killed in that house, unfortunate events take place one after another. You’ll scream your lungs out watching this movie.

 

8. Kaun (1999)

This film is about a young woman living alone in a house and an obsessed guy who is claiming to be a nice guy and a police inspector trying to get into her house.

 

9. Raaz (2002)

This film was actually inspired by a Hollywood movie, What Lies Beneath. I’m sure most of you have already watched this. A sure thriller which no movie lover can miss. The story revolves around a couple who moved to Ooty to restore their failing marriage. However, a ghost haunts the place they moved into and the wife finds out that the husband is a big part of the eerie plot.

 

10. Darna Mana Hai (2003)

You know how the controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma always makes into the news? Well, this is one kind of movie which was appreciated for his innovative thinking. Instead of dragging a movie with one plot, he narrates six different short stories parallely by keeping us at the edge of our seats.

One of the best movies of Vikram Bhatt. This movie will scare you more than you thought of. The story revolves around a woman who gets ‘infected’ by an evil spirit. With all the gore and scary noises, this movie makes into the top 15 horror movies of Bollywood.

 

14. Ragini MMS (2011)

Another Vikram Bhatt’s movie which made into the list is Horror Story. This movie revolves around 7 teenagers who spend a night at a haunted hotel.
