Superstar Vijay questioned by I-T sleuths in tax evasion case

Southern superstar Vijay, who also happens to be one of the highest-paid actors in Tamil film industry, was questioned by Income Tax sleuths in connection with a tax evasion case.

Apart from questioning Vijay, I-T officials also raised the properties of GS Cinemas and film financier Anbu Cheliyan are being raided in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Bigil which released in 2019 & starred Vijay was produced by AGS Cinemas and went on to garner Rs 300 crore worldwide. As per media reports, I-T officials met Vijay at the Neyveli coal mines where the actor is shooting for his upcoming film Master with Vijay Sethupathi.

Media reports also claimed that I-T department had also summoned the actor about the tremendous success of the sports drama. The interrogation process is expected to continue on Wednesday evening as he reaches Chennai.

Earlier in September 2015, Vijay’s residence was also searched ahead of the release of his film Puli. The properties of his co-stars Nayanthara and Samantha were also searched.

Vijay had outright denied committing any type of tax evasion at that time.

Another media report has claimed that BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit had opposed the release of his 2017 film Mersal as in the movie, the actor had made some critical remarks against government’s implication of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and demonetisation. 

Earlier in 2016, Vijay in an interview had said, “The Centre’s move is a good thing. It is courageous, was required and a welcome effort. There is no doubt it will help the country’s economy to grow, however, there could be 20% (of the population) who are rich. A small percentage of them may have committed a mistake (black money) but what did the rest do?”
