India’s first ever Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen’s journey is worth reading.Ā Sushmita participated in Miss Indiaās beauty pageant in 1994, the same year when Aishwarya Rai gave her name for the same. Do you know around 25 participant withdrew their names from the contestĀ because they thought that Aishwarya was too beautifulĀ and they don’t have a chance outshine is front of her.Ā But as fate had it, Sushmita won the Miss India Universe title and Aishwarya had to compromise with Miss India World title.
Hailing from a middle class family, SushmitaĀ couldnāt arrange for designer costumes as she was on the budget. Reports states Sushmita purchased her clothes for the contest from Delhiās famous Sarojini Nagar market. The story of an ordinary Indian girl from New Delhi becoming the most beautiful woman in the universe is extra-ordinary.

World will be surprised to know that Sushmita’s gown for the Miss Inida finale event was made out of a curtain cloth. (Yes you read it right) A local tailor stitched her finale gown as Sushmita couldn’t affordĀ an expensive gown like her fellow contestants. Even the gloves she wore in finale wasĀ made from socks which wasĀ embellished with lace.
A report of leading daily quoted Sushmita saying-
āI had just four dresses that I bought from Delhiās Sarojini Nagar market and decided to go ahead. It was surreal when I won Miss Universe India and then went on to win the international pageant. For days after that, I kept jumping all around my room with the crown on my head!ā
