Delhi Smog: Doctors Prescribed To Stay Inside Or Leave Delhi If Possible

Delhi Smog has become a national issue, all thanks to the severity of the air pollution. The air pollution of the NCR region has reached an alarming height. In the wake of the situation, The Indian Medical Association has announced a public health emergency. People have been advised to stay indoors. Schools have also been shot down until air quality improved.

Other medical experts have warned of possible respiratory, eye discomfort and cardiac due to the air pollution. President of IMA, Dr. K. K. Aggarwal said that urgent measures need to be taken to deal with the unmatched pollution level in the capital city. Talking about the same, Dr. Aggarwal said to a leading daily TOI, ” We plan to issue health advisories every few hours, depending on improvement or deterioration in the pollution, ”

Dr. Randeep Guleria, director at AIIMS said that he has seen a 20 percent rise in patients with cardiac conditions and respiratory in the last few days. According to the doc, Many people have been complaining about breathing problem and tightness in the chest. He said to TOI, “Pollution is known to affect lung growth in children, cause chronic bronchitis and increase incidence of heart diseases, among others,”

What should you do to minimize the damage:

Stay Indoors: Don’t go for morning walks and exercises

Wear Masks: You should wear masks, as it will minimize the risk of exposure to the toxic pollutants.

Leave Delhi If Possible: If it is possible, you can leave the city. If you are critically ill patients, you should definitely leave the city until the air quality normalizes.

Install air purifiers: If you don’t have any money issue, you should get an air purifier for your home. It purifies the air and keeps particulate matters away from the rooms.

Get Plants:  you can also get indoor plants to improve air quality. You should get plants like Areca palm, Boston fern, Sansevieria and English ivy. These plants are known to reduce the negative impact of toxic fumes.

Personal Initiatives: Please try to help the cause. Use public transport, carpool and go green. Please try to add greenery as much as you can in your life.

Talking about eye problem, an eye specialist said, ” Do not rub the eyes if they are itching,  Using artificial tears can help, but for long-term protection, people should wash the eyes regularly and wear protective goggles when visiting heavily polluted areas. ”
