The presence of strong female characters in the Indian silver screen is growing immensely. In mainstream Bollywood, the trend of female centric films is finding its place. In a male driven film industry, watching films with a female lead was a rarity before, which no longer seems to be the case.
Vidya Balan, one of the industry’s top actresses delivered two back-to-back hits in 2011- No One Killed Jessica and The Dirty Picture. Both of the movies went on to win accolades from critics and fans. She also took the centre stage in KAHAANI which released in 2012. In the same way in 2014, Kangana Ranaut delivered a hit with Vikas Bahl’s Queen. In the same year, Rani Mukerji’s Mardani was also released. The story was about a police officer’s hunt for a missing girl, who gets sold into sexual slavery. Priyanka Chopra’s Saath Khoon Maaf, Barfi and Mary Kom are some examples of Female centric films which hit the box office. A Hollywood TV series Quantico is starring her, for which she also bagged the “favourite actress in a new TV series” award. She’s the first ever South Asian actress to grace such a title.
