Bollywood famous comedy film director David Dhawan turns 60 today. He has started a new trend of comedy in the serious movie business in the 90s era. His collaboration with Govinda in the comedy films has made him the top directors of the 90s decade. David Dhawan aka Rajinder Dhawan was born on August 16, 1955, in Agartala and then migrated to Kanpur as his father was a manager in UCO Bank. After completing his 12th Class, he decided to be an actor.
David wants to be an actor and did apply for the prestigious institute of Film Television Institute of India In Pune. After seeing his batch mates Satish Shah and Suresh Oberoi acting, he was sure that he will not be so good in acting. Soon he shifted to editing department to complete the FTII Course.
After completing his editing course, he decided to be a director. His first film as a director was ‘Aandhiyan’ released in 1990. After directing few action and serious drama films, he decided to direct comedy films.
His collaboration with Govinda has been the best thing about his direction career. He first collaborated with Govinda in ‘Taaqatwar’ which was an action flick. Soon he turned his gear to comedy movies by starting Govinda in lead roles. He has directed 17 Films with Govinda in lead roles. His best-regarded comedy flick was 1993’s ‘Aankhen’, starring Govinda and Chunkey Pandey. Soon after the success of ‘Ankhen’ they went on to the director a series of No.1 Films with Govinda, except ‘Biwi No.1’ with Salman Khan.
In his Bollywood career, he has directed over 40 films but none of the films garnered him a Filmfare award as a director.
Apart from directing Bollywood movies, he even turned to Judge Television reality shows like ‘Nach Baliye 3’ and ‘Hans Baliye’.
David Dhawan is married to Karuna Chopra has two sons Director Rohit Dhawan and Actor Varun Dhawan. Varun is still the naughtiest child but has grown up as a good actor.
Despite a big director in the film industry, he didn’t launch his son into Bollywood. As we all know he has debuted in Bollywood with ‘Student Of The Year’ in 2012. The reason he didn’t direct him was, “I wanted him to go out there and find his bearings,” said David Dhawan.
