If Bollywood was a kingdom, the Khans – Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan – would be ruling it! (Not that they don’t rule it already!) Actors in the industry could do anything to get a role in a Khan movie. They’d agree to play even the smallest of roles and be content with it. But just like in every kingdom, there are some who do not wish to agree to everything the King would do or suggest, Bollywood does have some actresses who chose rather to pace their own path than tread a way made easier by being cast opposite a Khan!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Raja Hindustani
She was director Dharmesh Darshan’s dream choice, but Aishwarya, a model at that time, chose the Miss World contest which she went on to win. Just for the record, Aishwarya already had four films in her kitty even before participating in the beauty pageant!
Kareena Kapoor Khan – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Katrina Kaif – Chennai Express
Kajol – Veer Zaara
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Aishwarya even refused to play Anjali in the film which later became one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema. Karan Johar’s initial choice also included Twinkle Khanna to play Tina (Twinkle’s pet name is Tina!)
Juhi Chawla – Dil Toh Pagal Hai
Swara Bhaskar – Aanand L. Rai’s Next
The dusky diva who will be seen in the titular role in her upcoming film ‘Anarkali of Aara’ made headlines when she turned a role in Aanand L. Rai’s next for which she was approached to play SRK’s mother! The actress who has proven herself with side-roles and small-budget movies and also went on to do a webseries, thought it weird to portray the role offered by Rai and hence, declined it.
Kangana Ranaut – Aanand L. Rai’s Next
On Koffee with Karan Season 5, Kangana openly admitted that she didn’t want to work with any of the Khans and this apparently cost her a project with Sanjay Leela Bhansali opposite Shah Rukh Khan and seems like it’s not the first time! She also turned down the offer for playing the lead in Aanand’s movie as she was being cast opposite King Khan!
Amrita Rao – Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Amrita Rao was the first choice to play Salman Khan’s sister’s role in PRDP but the role later went on to Swara Bhaskar as Amrita wanted to play the female lead opposite Salman for which Sonam Kapoor had already been cast. Nonetheless, she turned down the offer of playing Khan’s sister in the movie.
Deepika Padukone (Be Prepared To Be Shocked!)
The leggy lass who made her silver screen debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan apparently, turned down working opposite Salman Khan, not once, not twice but FIVE times – Sultan, being one of them! Her reason being, the roles didn’t demand much from her character.
Amy Jackson – Kick
The actress who is a huge fan of Salman Khan wanted to work with Khan as his leading lady in ‘Kick’ but was bound by Shankar’s (director of ‘Robot’ & ‘I’) contract and this, had to turn down the film which went on to earn huge moolah at the box office!
Vidya Balan – Kick
The versatile actress who is considered the Lady Khan of Bollywood was also approached to play Jacqueline Fernandez’s role in ‘Kick’ but she turned down the role aa it didn’t offer much to her character.
Parineeti Chopra – Kick
Chopra who confessed in an interview with a leading film magazine that she has turned down many a films alongside the Khans due to lack or substance in her character in the film, said that she would rather hone her acting skills than work in a ‘hero’s film’!
Priyanka Chopra – Ghajini
The ‘Exotic’ actress was the first choice to play the lead opposite Aamir Khan in the Bollywood remake of ‘Ghajini’ but Priyanka Chopra wasn’t sure if the role would be strong enough for her portrayal of it and Aamir on the other hand had talked the makers into casting Asin, who played the role in the South Indian version of the film by the same title!
But all said and done, we just believe, whoever rejected and accepted whichever role, it only helped give (or will give) the film the best-suited casting (we hope so)!
