The film’s story revolves around a man who sets out to take vengeance against drug mafia after they take away an eight-year-old girl, with whom he shares a special bond.It is a loose adaptation of the 2010 Korean film The Man from Nowhere.
Story:
Set in Goa, Rocky Handsome stars John Abraham as Kabir Ahlawat, a mysterious man with a violent past, who runs a pawn shop and leads a solitary life in the Sunshine State. When a little girl named Naomi (staying in the same building as him, with whom he has forged a reluctant bond), gets kidnapped by members of the drug mafia, they soon realize that they have messed with the wrong dude. For Kabir is not an ordinary pawn-shop owner, but a former government covert operative, who is as deadly as a heart attack. Soon, Kevin Fereira (Nishikant Kamat), the drug lord and officers of the Anti-Narcotics Department find themselves hopelessly outmatched when trying to deal with a killing machine on their turf.
How Rocky (Kabir’s code-name) manages to save the day is the line of this story.
Review
John Abraham and Nishikant Kamat had teamed up for the first time to come up with Force, the remake of a South flick and after liking the film, we naturally anticipated that the duo will come up with another hit with Rocky Handsome, which is the remake of a Korean flick. However, unfortunately, the ‘forceful’ duo fumbled the ball this time rather clumsily, much to our disappointment
Rocky Handsome is a double: the screen splits into two, with both Rocky and Handsome come striding towards us, just in case we were confused. He only appears bad, see, he’s actually a good guy with a terrible past. The rest of the space is filled with an eight year old (Diya Chalwad) who’s made to talk like she’s double that, and given a relationship with our hero which is meant to tear you up, but feels faintly creepy. Theres a young woman with a drug habit. Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, you come upon the gracious Suhasini Mulay trucked out as a sleazy peddler of kids. Everything is all over the place in this Goa over-run by ‘Roosis’, and dark night clubs, and organ traders, and scenes of extreme, hard-core violence.
All in all, Rocky Handsome comes across as a film trying too hard to be ‘ohh-so-cool’.
Direction, music, and screenplay:
The direction of this movie is a lost one which doesn’t focus on the storyline rather to improve the oomph factor of the movie, which is also a fail BTW. It seems like a typical revenge movie where Rocky wants to fight with people. A better bond between the girl and Rocky would have imparted a substance to the plot. Music of Rocky Handsome is worth ignoring. Some background music during the fights is good but the songs serve only one purpose in the movie: interruption to the storyline.
The last word :
Rocky Handsome is a very average film with some finely executed action sequences on display. But, make no mistake: Don’t expect anything more from this film.
