AP Dhillon on Rejecting Movie Songs: Staying True to His Art
Breaking the Mold
AP Dhillon, the Indo-Canadian singer-rapper behind hits like Brown Munde, Excuses, and With You, has made headlines for his refusal to conform to industry norms. Despite receiving offers to sing and even star in Bollywood movies over the past two years, the Old Money singer has steadfastly turned them down. “I don’t want to be like the other sheep,” Dhillon remarked during a podcast interview with Ranveer Allahbadia.
Prioritizing Artistic Integrity
Dhillon explained his decision as a commitment to staying authentic in his craft. He expressed that working in films isn’t inherently a “bad idea” from a business perspective, but it doesn’t align with his personal values. According to him, the film industry often involves ceding creative control to others—a model that doesn’t sit well with his vision.
He emphasized, “The actors and directors get paid, but their business becomes someone else’s responsibility. That doesn’t fit with me.”
Setting a New Standard
Dhillon’s decision stems from a desire to avoid “selling” his music or compromising on its authenticity. While he is currently working on a Hindi track, he clarified that it is not tied to any film project. Dhillon hopes his choices will inspire other budding artists to prioritize their art over external pressures.
A Rising Icon Amid Controversies
Recently, Dhillon joined fellow Punjabi singer Karan Aujla on stage during a concert in Mumbai on December 21, 2024, attended by Bollywood stars Vicky Kaushal and Parineeti Chopra. This appearance came amid a social media controversy involving Punjabi sensation Diljit Dosanjh, who allegedly blocked Dhillon on Instagram. Dhillon humorously responded, saying Diljit should unblock him before offering public shoutouts.
What’s Next for AP Dhillon?
AP Dhillon continues to focus on his own path, proving that success doesn’t require following traditional routes. As he works on new music, fans can expect more hits that reflect his unique artistic identity, free from the constraints of the film industry.
