Will Aishwarya’s Sarabjit in 2016 do what Piku and Tanu Weds Manu Returns did this year?
While currently it is Jazbaa all the way for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, plans are already in place for her next. Sarabjit, which is finally getting ready to go on floors, already has a release date set for itself. What makes it all the more interesting is that this is the only film that is willing to take on IPL 2016 and that too when the tournament is at its peak.
“The adage of ‘a good film would work any which way’ always holds true,” a seasoned filmmaker adds, “If Sarabjit turns out to be a good film, Aishwarya has a golden opportunity in hand to shine.”
This year, Bombay Velvet released in the thick of the IPL season and while the overall product was rejected by the audience, the fact remains that the film added on to IPL disasters. On the other hand Piku, which released a week before Bombay Velvet, grew with every passing day to emerge as a Superhit while Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which released on the weekend leading to the IPL finals, not just took a fantastic opening but also emerged as a Blockbuster. Prior to that, even Gabbar Is Back emerged as a good grosser while releasing in the thick of IPL.
“In fact it is surprising that so many filmmakers today are still shying away from cricket as a competition,” adds a trade source, “Over the last few months, the interest level in this sport has anyways declined and IPL is no more a monster that it used to be. In fact I won’t be surprised in weeks to come, many more films actually join the vacant weekends during the IPL and Aishwarya ends up gains more company.”
While that happens, for now it is a solo show in the making for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda, who is playing the title role in the film.
