When Vidhu Vinod Chopra Gifted Amitabh Bachchan A ₹4 Crore Car & Got Slapped By His Mother: “Tu Khud Kyun Nahi Leta Gaadi?”

Vidhu Vinod Chopra, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers, once made headlines for his grand gesture towards megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The director gifted Big B a luxurious ₹4 crore Rolls Royce Phantom, but what followed was a hilarious reaction from his mother, who ended up slapping him and calling him ‘bewakoof’ (fool)!

Why Did Vidhu Vinod Chopra Gift A Rolls Royce To Amitabh Bachchan?

The story dates back to 2007 when Vidhu Vinod Chopra was working on his ambitious film, Eklavya: The Royal Guard, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, and Sharmila Tagore.

During an interaction, Chopra revealed that he couldn’t afford Big B’s travel and accommodation expenses at the time. Since the film had a tight budget, he requested Amitabh to cover his own flight and stay. The superstar graciously agreed to the request, helping the filmmaker manage the costs of the rest of the cast.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra later expressed his gratitude in a unique way—by gifting Amitabh Bachchan a lavish Rolls Royce Phantom worth ₹4.5 crore!

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mother’s Hilarious Reaction

When Chopra decided to present the luxury car to Big B, he took his mother along for the occasion. However, she had no idea about the actual price of the car and hilariously underestimated it to be just ₹11 lakh!

Recalling the funny incident, the 12th Fail director shared:

“I will never forget this. My mother handed the car keys to Amitabh Bachchan, and then we sat in my blue Maruti van. She casually asked me, ‘Tu Lamboo nu gaadi dedi?’ (You gave a car to Lamboo?), referring to Big B’s towering height. I replied, ‘Haan’ (Yes). She then asked, ‘Tu khud kyun nahi leta gaadi?’ (Why don’t you buy one for yourself?). I told her I would when the time was right. She guessed the price to be ₹11 lakh.”

When Chopra revealed the actual price of ₹4.5 crore, his mother was shocked and immediately slapped him, calling him a ‘bewakoof’ (fool)! He recalled her words:

“What is money if it can’t give you joy?”

Eklavya: A Box Office Failure, But An Oscar Entry

Despite the star-studded cast and grandeur, Eklavya: The Royal Guard failed at the box office. However, it was still chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category that year.

Final Thoughts

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s heartwarming gesture towards Amitabh Bachchan and his mother’s wholesome yet hilarious reaction make this story one for the ages. It also shows the deep respect and admiration Chopra holds for Big B, who stood by him during a challenging time.
