Ajay Devgn On ‘Taanaji’s Controversy, Says “Censor Board should be the final decision and nobody should interfere”

When it comes to historical movies or biopics, Bollywood has always landed in controversies. Be it ‘Mangal Pandey’, ‘Jodhar Akbar’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Padmaavat’ and the latest is ‘Manikarnika’. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Paadmavat’ landed into a serious controversy as many social groups in Rajasthan and other states felt that the movie has distorted the history and had tarnished the reputation of certain communities. After so many protests, ‘Padmaavat’ finally saw the light of the box office on 25th January 2018.

After that Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Manikarnika’ got embroiled in controversy and the makers of the movie were accused of misrepresenting the history. Even the makers received an ‘objectionable’ letter regarding the outfit worn by Kangana. A brahmin group ‘Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha’ from Rajasthan also alleged featuring a romantic scene between Rani Laxmibai and a British East India company agent. After this incident, the makers and Kangana herself clarified that the movie shows no objectionable scenes or incidents and it has portrayed Rani Laxmibai in a decent and respectful manner.

Now, Ajay Devgn is also prepping for his role in the upcoming biopic ‘Taanaji-The Unsung Warrior’ where is playing the lead role of Taanaji. In a recent interview to Filmymantra, Ajay said, “My film is very straight and clean. It’s following history. If somebody has an issue I know how to sort it out by sitting across the table because there is nothing controversial about my film. So I’m not worried about it.

When he was asked whether directors be afraid to take up such historical subjects for their films or not, Ajay said, “It’s sad. I think you have the censor board and the law. That should be the final decision and nobody should interfere.”

We wish Taanaji not to face any kind of controversies and gets a smooth release. Helmed by Om Raut, the biopic will release in 2019.
