While feeling twitterpated in her company is a usual feature, Shakti Mohan is quick to strike a warm camaraderie with anyone she encounters. Her craft may involve corporeal zeal and precision, but the lean danseur is far from being a brute! “The amount of trainings and rehearsals we go through, agility should be a part of our DNA,“ Shakti told us as she visited Chandigarh recently .
Coveted to her work, academic laurels blew her kisses and dance remained in hindsight. “I was preparing for UPSC when Terence sir spotted me and offered a scholarship. But it was a surprise since being an academic topper all my life, dance wasn’t even close to being a detour,“ she furthers, “But now that I look back, dance gave me the potency and strength that I was looking for.“
A reality show graduate, Shakti isn’t the clichéd shooting star who makes a grand advent and gets lost in oblivion. “It’s been five years since the show ended, and I think now is the time to give back to my people.“ Hence the workshops and world tours, that are a regular feature of her annual schedule.
Coming from a brood of talented and charismatic sisters, the Mohans are committed to concoct yet another miracle together.“We did this song called Chai Chai and the very motivation behind it was the fact that we sisters crave for our morning tea.Amidst all this hoopla, the matriarch is like a hostel warden. It’s silly but super fun.“
From being just a dancer to mentoring, Shakti’s impromptu visit to Chandigarh was for the same reason. “This city has unique talent. People from very humble backgrounds are gifted dancers and while they are slog ging to make ends meet, dance comes as an escape to their mundane lives. And to me this is a phenomenal instance of being an eager beaver.“
Perceptive yet vivid in intellect, Shakti’s future campaigns include Bollywood. “In talks for something, but it’s definitely related to dance,“ she trails off.
