In the world of biopics, joining the league is yet another film, to be produced by superstar Salman Khan under his banner. This film will trace the journey of Somen Banerjee, the owner of the nightclub hotspot Chippendales which is known for its male striptease performance.
But the subject gets much more darker.
Somen Banerjee was eventually given a prison sentence for attempted arson, racketeering, and murder for hire. He was subsequently given a sentence of 26 years in prison. But 1994, Banerjee’s body was found lying in his cell.
The story has all the shades of a gangster film, with crime, murder and foul-play all in a story.
In fact, the film which will start from the bylanes of Kolkata will travel to US and Europe as it brings to the life, the story of a simple guy whose ambition drives him to become one of the most renowned entrepreneurs. Born in a Bengali family, Somen aka Steve Banerjee’s father worked as a printer. While Somen came from a humble background, it is being said that he lived a dual life, that of an entrepreneur and one for his family. Somen has also been under the legal radar and has been accused of a couple of murders and attempted murders.
The Sultan star confirmed the news saying, “A Bengali man, who moved from India to America in the late 60s, struggled and created one of America’s most iconic brands. We are going to tell the story of Somen Banerjee, a man driven by fierce ambition, on celluloid,” reported a leading daily.
Amar Butala, CEO of Salman Khan Productions revealed that they have plans to create not just a feature film but also a mini-series on Somen Banerjee considering the intriguing nature of his life. He added that his life story had all elements and shades of a gangster film including greed, power and violence.
“The story of Somen Banerjee has all the shades of a gangster film — raw greed, power and violence. We’re currently working on the script and the plan is two-fold — to produce a feature film and to develop it as a mini-series as well,” said Amar Butala of Khan’s production house.
It is certainly a different kind of biopic in Bollywood, where at the moment biopics about sports-persons dominating the calendar.
