Oscar 2019: Set In India ‘Period. End Of Sentence’ Wins Oscar For Best Documentary

Period. End Of Sentence- a documentary tackling the stigma surrounding menstruation in rural India has just won the Oscar. Currently, it is available on popular streaming giant Netflix.

The 26-minute long documentary tackles one of the most taboo subjects in the world, menstruation. It tells the story of a group of women, who use a new machine and create low-cost sanitary pads.  This enables women in the village to be more independent and also improves their feminine hygiene at the same time.

25-year-old director Rayka Zehtabchi directed this documentary, which is produced by Guneet Monga. One of the rare turn of events, a woman director has won this award at the Oscars.

As she went to collect the award for Best Documentary Short for Period: End of Sentence, the elated Rayka Zehtabchi said, “I can’t believe a film about menstruation just won an Oscar… A period should end a sentence, not a girl’s education,”

The documentary beautifully introduces its viewers to the taboos around menstruation in rural India. It also shows how many girls in rural India drop out of school because of their periods.
