Let’s Talk About Periods: Qaiz Khan

Women’s health has always been given an apex importance across the world. However, when it comes to menstrual hygiene, especially in India, we often tend to shy away from addressing the issue. Menstruation in India which comes with a baggage of myths and superstitions still have menstruating women being subjected to some of the worst forms of discrimination and regarded as impure.

Having been inspired by actor Akshay Kumar for taking up such an initiative which needs a lot of courage in a country like India and talking about women’s health, is a man named Qaiz Khan who has decided to spread awareness among women and the society about menstrual hygiene.

Says Qaiz Khan, “We need to educate women about menstrual and genital health. Women need to get rid of the stigma attached to menstruation and other issues related to genital hygiene. Bleeding is as much a part of life of women as breathing, yet for many, the monthly period is still a taboo.”

 

 

According to survey reports, India accounts for a third of the deaths due to cervical cancer globally, with two women dying every two minutes. A new case is diagnosed every four minutes in the country. “The cancer which affects the opening of the uterus can be prevented if women use hygienic sanitary pads instead of cloth,” says Qaiz Khan

Walking on the footsteps of Mr. Arunachalam Muruganantham, the real man behind the story who inspired men to take up a sensitive issue like this, Qaiz Khan has taken it upon himself to do his bit towards improving the conditions of women’s health and publicly addressing the issue so that the perspective of women towards their own self changes and that more and more woman across the country begin to use sanitary pads.
