JIGRA : Alia proves her worth again being coming in a new avatar setting the bar high as always
*Jigra* is an intense jailbreak thriller led by Alia Bhatt, who fully commands her role in this action-packed film. Directed by Vasan Bala, *Jigra* uses the framework of a rescue drama but twists it by placing a woman, Satyabhama Anand (played by Bhatt), as the relentless savior. While the story can feel drawn out, the movie largely captivates with its gripping action and intriguing character arcs.
The plot centers around Satya, a woman determined to rescue her brother Ankur (Vedang Raina), who is on death row in a Southeast Asian prison on false drug charges. Satya’s motivation stems from a past tragedy that bound her to protect her brother, a responsibility she honors with unwavering conviction. With the help of a retired policeman Muthu (Rahul Ravindran) and former gangster Bhatia (Manoj Pahwa), Satya launches a daring plan to break Ankur out of prison, ultimately challenging a ruthless officer determined to thwart her.
What stands out is the film’s careful character development. Satya’s backstory, filled with a harsh childhood and strained family relationships, creates a layered, complex protagonist whose moral ambiguities make her compelling. Her loyalty to Ankur is clear from early scenes, where she promises to defend him against any threat, cementing a powerful bond that fuels her unyielding mission. This sister-brother dynamic, reversed in traditional protective roles, adds a refreshing touch to the narrative.
The film is visually arresting, thanks to Swapnil S. Sonawane’s cinematography and Achint Thakkar’s pulsating background score, which amplifies the tension in both action-packed and quieter moments. Despite some pacing issues and a slightly exaggerated final act, the intense climax manages to keep audiences on edge.
Alia Bhatt shines, embodying Satya with strength and vulnerability. Vedang Raina’s portrayal of Ankur adds emotional weight, while Manoj Pahwa provides stellar support with his easy charm. Bhatt’s role as a “hero” challenges gender stereotypes, making *Jigra* not just a thriller but also a tribute to female resilience and grit.
Overall, *Jigra* may not be perfect, but it’s a compelling watch, elevated by Bhatt’s committed performance and Bala’s unique vision.
