After Udta Punjab, it is now the turn of Rohit Dhawan’s action thriller Dishoom to run afoul of religious groups.
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has said that the Varun Dhawan-John Abraham film hurts religious sentiments. More specifically, they have objected to the use of a ‘kirpan’ as an accessory by leading lady Jacqueline Fernandez in a song – ‘Sau Tarah Ke’ – from Dishoom.
A leading daily reported that the DSGMC has written to the Central Board of Film Certification asking that the song be removed from the movie, terming it “highly offensive” and a “deliberate insult to the well-established Sikh tenets and customs”. The DSGMC has reportedly also sent a legal notice to Rohit Dhawan and Jacqueline.
Apart from the DSGMC, another religious body has also expressed their opposition to the song. As per reports in another leading daily, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has asked Rohit Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez to apologise for hurting Sikh sentiment, failing which they would pursue legal action.
The SGPC also demanded that the teaser for the song, uploaded online by the film’s team on 13 June, be removed from all social media sites. “It is worrisome that a few film-makers are using Sikh religious symbols for their own vested interests,” a spokesperson for the SGPC said.
