EXCLUSIVE | Govinda slams film industry and awards shows for typecasting him as a ‘comic actor’
Govinda, the undefeated comedy king of Bollywood has recently had an interview with a leading media house wherein he spoke about his times, the actors of his times, the movies of his times, his movies, his family, current generation stars and his plans ahead! The actor is busy promoting his movie FryDay these days and amidst all the promotions the actor has recently slammed the industry for typecasting him as a comic actor!
At the trailer launch of the movie, Varun Sharma, Choocha from Fukrey was addressed as a comic actor to which he had made it clear that he is not a comedian but an actor. It’s just that audience like watching him do comedy but he is an actor plain and simple. In an interview that followed, Govinda was asked his opinion on Varun’s response and Govinda supported the actor! Govinda said, “At the time when I delivered biggest blockbusters like Aankhen, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, Deewana Mastana, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan a “Best Actor in Comedy Role” award was started and not “Best Actor in Romantic Role” or “Best Actor in Action Role”. He slammed the awards shows for typecasting him and sidelining him.
He also slammed the film industry for not giving enough respect to those who did comedy and went on to say that his price too suffered because of that. And compared the treatment here to how it is in Hollywood where those who do comedy win Oscars and Charlie Chaplin is considered a legend.
He advised Varun to not feel shy in demanding the fees he deserves and to not let people compare him to Govinda. Instead, he asked him to say he’s like Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan. Govinda also revealed in the initial phase of his career he mostly did action drama and other heavy duty stuff. As it took a toll on his psyche, it was Dilip Kumar who advised him to do the entertaining cinema and as they say, rest is history.
