CATE BLANCHETT’S CAROL IS UP AGAINST RACHEL WEISZ’SLA GIOVINEZZA AND THE LOBSTER

Cannes Film Festival

The latest movies of actors Cate Blanchett, Rachel Weisz and Matthew McConaughey will be among those competing at the Cannes Film Festival next month, organisers said on April 17.

Cate Blanchett’s Carol, in which she featured with actress Rooney Mara, is a love story set in New York. While Rachel Weisz has two movies – Italian film La Giovinezza, also starring Michael Caine and Jane Fonda, and Greece film The Lobster with Colin Farrell – listed for competition.

Mathew McConaughey’s American film The Sea of Trees, with Naomi Watts, has been selected for the competition.

Films starring Benicio del Toro and Salma Hayek will be vying for Cannes’ Palme d’Or top prize.

Other movies chosen include several Asian picks – The Assassin from Taiwan, Umimachi Diary from Japan, Mountains May Depart from China – and an Australian version of Macbeth, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.

The organisers said at a media conference in Paris that they had so far finalised 17 films for the competition, but would be adding more in coming weeks to have around 20 movies.

The Cannes Film Festival will run from May 13 to 24.
