Box Office – Drishyam scores more than Bangistan and Jaanisaar put together
As expected, Bangistan and Jaanisaar have proven to be Disasters at the Box Office. There was no buzz for either of the two films before release and while Bangistan was still at least in news due to its promotion, Jaanisaar pretty much came unannounced. This pretty much reflected in the opening footfalls that both films got, which could very well be counted on the fingertips.
Coming to Bangistan first. A film with decent production values and atrocious content, the writing was clear on the wall from the time its promo was unveiled. No wonder, just about no one was interested and terrible reviews further killed the film, hence resulting in an out and out disastrous weekend. With just around 4 crore* coming in, this reasonably mounted film shot in overseas locations would struggle to reach the end of its first week. The film is set to be lowest ever Excel production as their disastrous Game too had managed collections around the 7.5 crore in its final run, and Bangistan won’t even reach there.
As for Riteish Deshmukh, it is an aberration of sorts as he comes after 11 back to back grossers out of which eight were successful, two were blockbusters (Ek Villain, Lai Bhaari) and only disappointment, Humshakals (which also managed collections to the tune of 65 crore in its final run).
Jaanisaar struggled to hit even the 50 lakhs mark during the weekend and it won’t be surprising if it is pulled out during the course of the week itself.
Meanwhile, Ajay Dev gn’s Drishyam made some use of the space available for itself and netted around 12 crore* more over the weekend, hence nearing the 60 crore mark. Average.
All eyes are now on Brothers to resume the ‘achche din’ that Bollywood has been enjoying of late. The film is seeing good hype building for it and the Akshay Kumar-Sidharth Malhotra-Karan Johar-Karan Malhotra combination should help it take a very good opening this weekend.
