You might be thinking Bollywood has finally warmed up to the art of kissing on screen with the new breed of films. But a small correction here: at the very outset, Bollywood did go bold only to get regressive late!
Kisses and smooches are usual forms of showing affection towards someone which Censor Board took time to accept. But we did have some salacious and hot smooches in the history of Indian Cinema.
Devika Rani & Himanshu Rai –
Bollywood’s first smooch scene wasn’t by any Khan or Kapoor but between Devika Rani and Himanshu Rai in ‘Karma’ which released in 1933. They were reel-life co-stars and real-life husband-wife. That was the inception of Bollywood and we had already sealed the deal with a kiss!
Rishi Kapoor & Dimple Kapadia-
Raj Kapoor, when turned director, never shied away from showing what he wanted to show! ‘Bobby’ saw Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia lock lips. Although not ideally passionate, it did create quite a stir!
Aamir Khan & Karishma Kapoor-
And here comes our meticulous Khan locking lips under the tree while wet. Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor kiss from ‘Raja Hindustani’ is the most memorable one ever since it was shown at a time when flowers used to do all the kissing to imply the ‘actual’ kissing!

And then came the murderous serial kisser of Bollywood cinema, Emraan Hashmi. His passionate kisses in ‘Murder’ are still discussed. More than the concept, the film worked for its salacious content although the makers cry otherwise!

But it took a Hrithik Roshan to get the emotion right! In ‘Dhoom 2’, his liplock with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was what love makes you do when it devours you. Kissing isn’t just an act, but a feeling.
Shahid Kapur & Kareena Kapoor –
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor too turned on the love when they kissed at the climax scene of ‘Jab We Met’ hence, making it evident that it is love’s overpowering nature that prompts you to kiss.
Shah Rukh Khan & Katrina Kaif –
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ marked Shah Rukh Khan’s first onscreen kiss. Unlike Aamir Khan, this Khan had never kissed onscreen until he was paired opposite Katrina Kaif. Their sparkling chemistry not only created a sensation but also grabbed headlines. It seems the director wanted to cash in on SRK’s kissing factor and thus there were not just one but three steaming kisses!
Shashi Kapoor & Zeenat Aman –
Raj Kapoor films were often in news for their sensual content. Shashi Kapoor kissed the village girl Zeenat Aman in ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ in 1978. Much ahead of its time, the plot and Zeenat’s bold avatar made headlines for months. Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman shared a steamy lip lock under a waterfall. This kissing scene is still remembered as the hottest kiss of the industry!
