Annu Kapoor Claims Shah Rukh Khan’s *Chak De India* Altered Facts to Favor Communal Bias: “Aimed to Portray Muslim as Positive Character”

*Chak De! India,* the celebrated Shah Rukh Khan film directed by Shimit Amin, tells the compelling story of a women’s hockey team and a coach on a redemptive journey after being accused of disloyalty. Recently, veteran actor Annu Kapoor sparked controversy, alleging the film incorporated communal undertones by portraying Shah Rukh’s character as Muslim. His remarks have reignited discussions around the film’s portrayal and intent.

In a recent interview with ANI, Annu Kapoor criticized *Chak De! India* for allegedly changing the lead character’s background to inject a communal angle. He argued that Kabir Khan, played by Shah Rukh, was based on real-life coach Mir Ranjan Negi, yet his name was altered to a Muslim identity. Kapoor speculated this decision was made to showcase a Muslim character positively, while he claimed Hindu representation was subtly minimized.

Kapoor said, “The main character in *Chak De! India* is inspired by a well-known coach, Negi Saab. But here in India, they chose to show a Muslim as a heroic character and sideline the Pandit (Hindu) representation. They use the concept of *Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb* (Hindu-Muslim unity) to fit a communal angle.”

The 2007 sports drama features Shah Rukh Khan as Kabir Khan, a former hockey player accused of betrayal following a loss to Pakistan. He returns as the women’s team coach, where he strives to instill unity, resilience, and a desire to prove themselves on the world stage. His efforts and journey with the team symbolize redemption and the breaking of societal stereotypes.

Meanwhile, Annu Kapoor, an accomplished actor with over four decades in Indian cinema, is best known for his National Award-winning role in *Vicky Donor.* Kapoor’s extensive filmography includes memorable performances in *Ram Lakhan, Mr. India,* and *Dream Girl,* establishing him as a notable presence in Bollywood.
