“Bajrangi Bhaijaan” is in legal trouble again
It was recently reported that Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan has been cleared with a U/A certificate by the Censor Board. Considering the film binds both Hindu and Muslim sentiments, a new set of representatives were further hired to assure the film doesn’t cause any communal tension and was passed with about 5 cuts! However in a sudden turn of events, Bajrangi Bhaijaan has now been slapped with a legal notice over its song Bhar Do Jholi Mein. Yes!
Reportedly, Abdul Samee Siddiqui, who owns the rights to the dargah song after the heirs of Sabri brothers sold it to him in 2007, has sent the notice to Salman Khan, his production house, director Kabir Khan’s banner, T-Series and music composer Pritam apart from the studio backing the film and a few others involved with the project. While talking to a leading daily, Abdul argued, “I acquired the rights from the heirs of Sabri brothers eight years ago for a film that I was making on Indo-Pak relations with Rajkumar Santoshi which didn’t materialise. But that doesn’t mean the qawwali can be used by another person just like that. If they don’t reply to this letter, we will soon decide our future course of action.”
The comparison between the original song and Bhar Do Jholi Mein were raised, as soon as the song hit the web. Salman too had quoted during an event in agreement and tagged Bhar Do Jholi Mein as his favorite track from Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He had also tweeted about the same.
Amjad Farid Sabri, one of the heirs to the Sabri heritage too released a statement saying, “My kids are Salman Khan fans. So am I. But I am upset and angry because they used the qawwali without our consent. Had they asked, I would have happily let them use it in their film.”
While Salman or Kabir Khan are yet to comment on this. Mini Mathur who plays a prominent role in the film has tweeted saying, “Really? And on what basis?”
A petition seeking ban on the release of Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan has been filed in a Allahabad High Court today. The Public Interest Litigation has been filed by a Chitrakoot-based social activist Anil Pradhan, who believes that the movies has some highly controversial content, which can “hurt religious sentiments of the majority community”.
