Shahid Kapoor on Taking the ‘Outsider’s Route’ Despite Celebrity Parents

Shahid Kapoor, son of renowned actors Pankaj Kapur and Neliima Azeem, recently opened up about his journey in Bollywood, explaining why he took the ‘outsider’s route’ despite having parents in the film industry. Speaking on The Faye D’Souza Show, the actor revealed that circumstances and personal choices shaped his career path.

‘What Was the Other Route?’

When asked about taking the outsider’s path, Shahid remarked, “What was the other route available to me?” He explained that, though he shares a good equation with his father, they didn’t have the kind of relationship where he felt comfortable seeking help. Shahid, who lived with his mother from the age of 3, said, “I didn’t have a relationship with my father where I would allow myself to ask him.”

Despite the challenges, Shahid emphasized that his father was always there for advice and guidance. However, he took pride in building his career independently, stating, “I was very proud like that.”

A Complex Family Dynamic

Shahid reflected on his upbringing, mentioning how his mother, Neliima Azeem, was juggling multiple responsibilities. At 36, she had his half-brother Ishaan Khatter while managing Shahid, who was 14 at the time. He shared, “It’s not easy having a child at that age and another son who was 14, especially in Mumbai during her second marriage.”

Neliima herself was trying to re-establish her career and couldn’t leverage her connections to secure work for him. Shahid acknowledged her efforts, saying she was “struggling to balance everything.”

Determined to Carve His Own Path

The Jab We Met actor concluded that the outsider’s route wasn’t a choice but the only option for him. He didn’t feel entitled to rely on his parents’ influence, instead choosing to create his own opportunities.

Upcoming Project

On the professional front, Shahid Kapoor is set to star in Deva alongside Pooja Hegde. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on January 31, 2025.
