Urvashi Rautela's 'Virgin Bhanupriya' Movie Review
News & Gossip

Urvashi Rautela’s ‘Virgin Bhanupriya’ grabs viewers attention with its bold yet relatable storyline!

Movie – Virgin Bhanupriya

Director – Ajay Lohan

Cast – Urvashi Rautela, Archana Puran Singh, Niki Walia, Rumana Molla, Gautam Gulati

Rating – ***

A well-thought-through script trying to capture an orthodox mindset of society and how a teenager struggles with her emotions and sexual desires while facing the criticism of the society she lives in. Ajay Lohan’s directorial ‘Virgin Bhanupriya’ wonderfully captures and successfully displays how society sees sexual curiosity as something abhorrent.

Urvashi Rautela in the role of a teenage girl, Bhanupriya, has proved herself as an actor. She perfectly embodies the demeanor, innocence, vulnerability, naïveness, and body language of a college-going girl. Urvashi has handled her character with grace and looks convincing in the role of an adventurous girl who wants to have fun and experience life. Even with her silence, Urvashi has successfully conveyed the emotions of Bhanupriya, leaving viewers to explore different shades of her character.

Striking a chord with its bold yet relatable theme, ‘Virgin Bhanupriya’ showcases teenage romance and tries to simplify the complex and debatable topic of young sexual-desires that our orthodox society denounces. Despite its bold subject the movie is not a disguised sex comedy but a family drama that takes a jibe at the conservative society that views sexual curiosity as a sacrilegious act.

The plot of the movie is quite gripping, it revolves around the central character played by Urvashi Rautela of a young college going girl, who despite social pressure and restrictions wants to lose her virginity. Inspite of the freedom given by her family and the company she keeps in the movie, Urvashi faces so many problems in pursuing her sexual-desires. Urvashi as Bhanupriya comes across as most college going girls who have physical desires but due to social and family pressure couldn’t live their fantasies.

Her childhood best friend, Rukul Singh (Rumana Molla); could be seen helping her friend out in time of needs. Rukul even tells Bhanupriya to exploit men and fulfill her sexual desires as it is alright to do so. The role of Rukul’s could have been improvised but here her borderline hysteria can repulse you by the things she does to her friend that takes Bhanupriya into several guilt-trips throughout the movie.

Rajiv Gupta, as Bhanupriya’s father is projected as a ‘modern-day father’ who knows what her daughter’s NEEDS and constantly reiterates that he knows what his daughter is going through during her awakened years, though he seems indifferent to her feminist side. Rajiv, however, could be seen publicly body-shaming his wife, played by Archana Puran Singh, and questioning his daughter’s choice of sanitary pads. Rajiv’s awful humor takes viewers by shock when he makes homophobic jokes on a friend of one his daughter’s suitors (Sumit Guklati)’s, going about throwing eggs on others and trying to make Bhanupriya’s drink spiked Vodka just for the sake of a bet.

Archana Puran Singh in the role of mother and Sumit Gulati, as one of her suitors, have done fantastic job in terms of acting.

All the four songs are good and blend well with the story. The title song by composer-duo, Saurabh-Vaibhav, however, is genuinely melodious.
