There was immediate criticism of the news when it was revealed that Martin McDonagh and Taylor Swift would launch Hollywood trade publication Variety’s Director on Director series.

The singer beat out many well-known directors for the position despite having only directed one short film. Soon after, it was revealed that Taylor would make her feature film directing debut with a screenplay written by her and produced by Searchlight Pictures.

James Cameron and Francis Ford Coppola, as well as up-and-coming younger filmmakers Ryan Coogler and Sarah Polley, are among the noticeable names in the lineup that was revealed on Thursday.

A few of these filmmakers are up for the best director award before the awards season the following year.

Movie fans used social media to express their displeasure with the situation. a user of Twitter said, “One person commented, “What is this BS?????? Taylor Swift, who directed 1 (one) short movie in the same lineup as Ryan Coogler and Rian Johnson, lmao,” and another added, “What is this?” Unfortunately, mediocrity is in charge, but that is to be expected from Hollywood.”

The timing of Taylor’s directorial debut news, which provided little information but appeared to support the singer’s plans as a filmmaker, was also questioned by fans.

Swiftly stepping up to support Taylor were her supporters as well. She is directing a full-on movie now, chill, a Twitter user wrote.

Another fan expressed excitement while posting images of Taylor directing her music videos. Such a talent (scarf and film emojis). Taylor’s 10-minute music video for the song All Too Well was released in 2021.

Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien’s troubled marriage is depicted in the song. The following year, it was nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year as well as Best Music Video.

The critically acclaimed movies In Bruges (2008) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, were directed by playwright-turned-director Martin (2017).

Frances McDorman and Sam Rockwell’s performances earned him two Oscar nominations. Martin’s most recent film, The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Brendon Gleeson and Colin Farrell, has already been named to many best movie of 2022 lists.

On Monday, the premiere of the episode starring Taylor and Martin is scheduled.
