Mumbai, August 13th: Manish Mundra, the founder-producer of Mumbai-based Drishyam Films, is set to make a foray into direction with an untitled social drama feature film inspired by true events.
A published author, photographer, producer and corporate leader, Manish has been on a quest for the right story to turn director. He says, “Deep down in my heart, there was always an instinct to make my own film. Because of other engagements and priorities in life, I started with producing films, which I will continue to do. But I believe now the time is right to take the next step in my creative journey.”
The film is inspired by real-life events, details of which are still unfolding. Manish shares how this one woman’s ordeal shook him to his very core and motivated him to stand with the survivor and contribute in her ongoing fight for justice. “For some time now I have been following the story of a brave heart Indian woman and her difficult journey through the toxic and corrupt confluence of politics, police and judiciary. It has made such an impact on me that I have decided to plunge into the world of filmmaking to bring this important story to the world.”
The producer of award-winning films such as Newton (which starred Stree hitmaker Rajkummar Rao and Mirzapur powerhouse Pankaj Tripathi) and Masaan (the debut launchpad for Uri star Vicky Kaushal), Mundra is currently developing the project with a strong team. Dedh Ishqiya writer Darab Farooqui will pen the screenplay.
Manish, who was also feted by Variety magazine as last year’s Top 10 Producers to Watch Out For, will be co-directing the film with writer-director Supreet K Singh.
To be shot extensively in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, with famed cinematographer Avinash Arun (Killa, Hichki, Karwaan) behind the lens, the film will go on floors in January 2020.
Since setting up Drishyam Films in 2015, Manish as a producer has been nurturing high quality independent cinema, which has won acclaim at the world’s biggest film festivals as well as a lot of love from local Indian audiences. “Life is always about change and experiments and trying new things. I thank god for empowering me enough to take up this new challenge of filmmaking.”
Drishyam Films has four films in its kitty this year, three of which are co-produced with Jio Studios. Their upcoming releases include National Award-winning Bengali director Suman Ghosh’s Hindi debut Aadhaar starring Mukkabaaz actor Vineet Singh, veteran actor Seema Pahwa’s directorial debut Ram Prasad ki Tehrvi starring Konkana Sensharma and Vikrant Massey among others, and Umrika director Prashant Nair’s anthology feature Tryst with Destiny. Along with these, they have also produced their first regional feature, a Marathi film titled Ghaath directed by Chhatrapal Ninawe and starring acclaimed actor Jitendra Joshi.
