  • Does Bollywood lack the spine and confidence to make authentic content? Karan Johar replies.

Karan Johar has voiced concerns regarding the Hindi film line trends and lacking the spine to produce original content.

Karan Johar is one of the most famous producers in the Indian film industry. He is renowned for directing well-known hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which many people love.

Recently, while speaking at a chat show, he expressed his worries about the present trends in Bollywood and implied that the Hindi film industry lacks the spine and confidence to make authentic content.

Karan Johar emphasises the trend of ‘recreations’ in Bollywood

In a round table chat hosted by Galatta Plus, the ace producer accentuated the worrisome trends in the Bollywood industry.

Johar said, “I think the root problem is that we come from a mainstream line in the Hindi industry, including myself, which does not have one solid quality that every other industry on this panel has.”

“That is trust. We always move with the flow. We had such an authentic voice in Salim-Javed in the 70s. We developed a specific character, and the concept of that angsty, mad hero emanated in other cinemas.”

“Then, in the 80s, abruptly, something happened, and there came a host of recreations. That’s where the confidence loss began. We commenced remaking every prominent movie in Tamil and Telugu.”

Karan Johar underlines that Bollywood lacks the backbone and belief to make unblemished content

Karan expressed, “In the 90s, one love story stunned the country Aapke Hain Koun. Everyone, including myself, chose to jump on that love bandwagon, and Shah Rukh Khan was formed. But we let go of all our cores in the 70s.”
