- Supporters of the former Duchess of Sussex reacted angrily to a piece that called Meghan Markle a “narcissist” and mentioned her alongside Elon Musk and Donald Trump.
An article that labelled Meghan Markle as a “narcissist” and listed her alongside Kanye West, Elon Musk, and Donald Trump sparked a furious response from the former Duchess of Sussex’s supporters.
The article received a lot of backlash on social media for unfairly targeting Meghan because of her race and was labelled “racist” and “irresponsible” by many.
The opinion piece by contributing author Joanna Weiss, titled “2022 Is the Year We Finally Got Tired of Narcissists,” discussed the Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan, in which Prince Harry and Meghan discussed their relationship and the process of stepping down from their royal duties in great detail. The piece referred to this as a “narcissistic instinct.”
An excerpt from the opinion piece written by Politico Magazine stated, “If the Sussexes’ addiction to the public eye is benign — they seem tiresome, but genuinely well-intentioned — a narcissist’s constant quest for eyeballs and acclaim can get a lot more dangerous.” Social media users reacted to it by criticising the inclusion of Meghan in the list as unfair and careless.
“Listing Meghan Markle within the same category of the narcissist as Elon Musk and Donald Trump is a wildly irresponsible and truly white choice,” wrote writer and cultural critic Rebecca Carroll in a tweet.
What the hell, Politico – there is no planet where Meghan Markle belongs with this group of people, wrote author and political analyst Kirsten Powers in a tweet.
An assertive Black woman is not automatically a “narcissist.” Doesn’t it seem like the insane hatred directed at her proves her point?
The editorial director of Politico, Ryan Heath, responded to Lisa Glass’ claim that 2022 “is the year we all finally got tired of Politico” by tweeting, “If you want to write-off an entire publishing because one of our 600 journalists also include Meghan Markle on a list, you are tired of free debate. You can say that if you disagree with her being included on the list.
Several users criticised the author for the article and shared the article on Twitter with the hashtag “Joanna Weiss Is A Racist.” “Misogynoir (racism/misogyny) is NOT free debate,” a user wrote. It’s hatred.
Joanna Weiss calling Meghan Markle a “narcissist” (a Black person who doesn’t understand “their place”) is to denigrate her. What is Prince Harry, who started this journey and has accompanied her the entire way?
Another person wrote on Twitter, “Meghan protecting her mental health is narcissism? Because she told her abuser, “I MATTER although you say I don’t,” you’re continuing a myth that minimises a black woman’s plea for assistance.
On December 8, the first segment of the Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan was made available. Three additional episodes were made available on December 15.
