Avatar: The Way of Water: India contends with China and US for ticket sales

The highly awaited movie Avatar: The Way of Water has been making a splash at the box office since its launch on Wednesday, earning roughly $180 million through Friday. 

The movie is projected to make a total of $425 million worldwide over the weekend.

 India has made a substantial contribution to this sensation, with a record-breaking $6 million on its onset day, ranking as the sixth most prominent market for the movie. 

However, when considering just first-day earnings, India leaps to third place, near following North America ($36 million) and China ($20 million), ahead of generally more significant markets such as the United Kingdom ($4.50 million), South Korea ($3.25 million), France ($2.90 million), and Germany ($2.60 million).

North America – $53 million

China – $24 million

South Korea – $9.80 million

France – $9.50 million

Germany – $8.60 million

India – $6 million

Mexico – $5.90 million

Australia – $5.50 million

United Kingdom – $4.50 million

While North America and China presently lead in terms of overall box office collections, India has created a strong showing in terms of ticket sales for Avatar: The Way of Water. 

On Friday, the movie sold almost 2.30 million tickets in India, just following behind North America’s 2.60 million and China’s 2.55 million. 

This is especially remarkable considering that the movie was just shown on 4,000 screens in India, compared to 15,000 in North America and 45,000 in China. 

India periodically ranks among the leading markets for Hollywood movies in terms of ticket sales.
